The Coral Museum

We have gathered the stories, documents, jewellery, sailing instruments, paintings, engravings and prints that had been handed down from generation to generation, forming a compelling narrative that tells the incredible tales of the people, poets, adventurers and sailors who characterised Sciacca during those extraordinary years.

The Nocito Coral Museum was founded in 2018 at the behest of Peppino Di Giovanna, Laura’s father and Concetta’s grandson.

Fascinated by his family’s stories, he began to research and spread the history of the incredible discovery of fossil coral off the coast of Sciacca back in 1994, which had almost been lost and turned into legend. After thirty years of research, aided by his children Laura and Mario, the first two rooms of the Museum were set up in the premises of the Nocito company, where their great-grandmother Concetta first founded the business. The vast collection includes prints, fishing and sailing instruments, ancient jewellery and, above all, stories of those men and women who lived through an incredible period in Sicilian history.
It is therefore first and foremost the tales of these people, dazzled by the discovery of an incredible treasure buried in the middle of the sea, that we want to unveil with our Museum, to pass on the history of those people whose passion, and sometimes sacrifice, have marked our lives. We tell these stories not only because they are fascinating, but because, above all, by knowing our roots, we can build our future.

The founding of the museum

After thirty years of research, assisted by his children Laura and Mario, the first two rooms of the museum were set up on the premises of the Nocito company. The museum contains an array of prints, fishing and sailing instruments, ancient jewellery and, above all, stories of the men and women who lived through an incredible period of Sicilian history. It is therefore primarily the stories of these people, dazzled by the discovery of an incredible treasure buried in the middle of the sea, that we want to tell with our Museum, to pass on the history of those people whose passion, and sometimes sacrifice, have marked our lives. We tell these stories not just because they are fascinating, but because, above all, by knowing our roots, we can build our future.
